Is Your Water Safe For Your Children To Drink?

Posted on June 14, 2009 by Tia

No one would argue that clean, healthy water is essential for the health of children. It is important to understand, however, that contaminants in drinking water have a far greater impact on the health of children than they do on adults. And it is even more important to understand that most tap water in the US does contain contaminants, including lead, which pose a serious health threat to children. The defense systems which protect us from disease and toxins develop over the course of childhood and adolescence. Children s bodies are therefore more sensitive and vulnerable to carcinogens, lead, bacteria and water-borne parasites than are healthy adults. Our children are exposed, through air and water pollution and our mass produced and treated foods, to far more toxins than our parents or even our own generation was during our childhood. While we are limited in our ability to affect the quality of our air and food, it is possible to remove virtually all toxins from our drinking and showering water. And that is good news, since an abundant daily intake is...

Learn The Signs Of Lung Cancer

Posted on April 19, 2009 by Mervin

This year, nearly 175,000 Americans will learn they have lung cancer. Knowing the signs of lung cancer can help you catch it early, and may contribute to survival. Everyone knows that smoking causes lung cancer. But so does exposure to substances like second-hand smoke, arsenic, radon, asbestos and air pollution. Dana Reeve, widow of actor Christopher Reeve, announced that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer despite being a nonsmoker. There are currently no reliable screening tests for lung cancer like mammograms for breast cancer, so it s important for people at risk to look out for signs of the disease, including persistent cough or coughing blood, recurring pneumonia or bronchitis, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. A chest X-ray will often reveal a lung tumor and its location. Other tests, such as CT or PET scans, can provide more detailed information. To be certain that you have lung cancer, tissue from your lung will be removed and analyzed. This is called a biopsy. If you have cancer, your treatment will depend on the type of cancer, its...

How Much Calcium Do You Need?

You ve probably heard that you need to take a calcium supplement each day - even if you are taking a multi-vitamin. This is because most people don t get enough calcium in their diets and the multi-vitamins don t have the recommended daily dosage of calcium in them; even though they do have other nutrients and minerals that we need. We need calcium to keep our bones and teeth strong, but it is also needed to help our muscles contract properly, to help our blood clot, to help nerves carry messages, to keep our hearts beating properly, and to prevent diseases such as Osteoporosis. Without calcium our bodies are in big trouble. We get some calcium from the foods we eat. But again, most people don t consume enough of these foods in a single day to get the required amount of calcium that is needed by the body, even if they are taking an additional multi-vitamin. Most people don t even know how much calcium they need to meet their body s requirements. Doctors always tell us to take a calcium supplement - but they almost always fail to say how much calcium is...
